Smaller Spouts and Forest Management
At Christies' Maple Farm, we are always looking for the best way to care for our trees. In 1999 we moved to the cutting edge technology of ultra thin 5/16 inch Health Spouts, or taps, in lieu of the more commonly used 7/16 inch taps. The unique thin design allows for a sufficient flow of sap yet posses the least possible stress on the tree.
Making maple syrup is all about Forest Management. A sugar maple tree must be about 40 years old in order to be mature enough to produce a decent quantity of sap. With that kind of regeneration period, we will do anything to make a tree's life long and productive! We do not add any fertilizers to the soil or spray our sugarbush with any pesticides. Just pure mother natures work. We are currently applying for our Organic Certification.
The key to a healthy sugarbush is to let as much light as possible into the woods to promote active growth. Each summer, Team Maple carefully clears brush growth and removes and dead or diseased trees, always careful to follow the American Tree Farm Association detailed forestry plan.
