In mid February we begin the “tapping” process by drilling 1.5 inches into the side of each tree using a 5/16” drill bit. We then tap SPOUTS snuggly into each drilled hole, and attach the spouts to 5/16 diameter FEEDER TUBING. This feeder tubing is connected to other nearby trees with “T” fittings in a series referred to as a RUN.
When a run of 5-8 trees is joined together, the 5/16” tubing is at full capacity and must be connected to a MAINLINE. The mainline tubing is larger in diameter than the feeder tubing and channels the sap of 100’s of different runs down to a 5,000-gallon storage tank the base of the sugarbush. The Team pumps the sap from this storage tank into Ol’ Sappy, our trusty stainless steel sap truck, and haul it to the sugarhouse for boiling.
At the end of each season, the taps are pulled out of each tree in order to minimize the damage to the tree. The entire system is pressure washed and put away until the next season!
