Sugarmaker Colin Christie has been making maple syrup here at Christies' Maple Farm for longer than he cares to admit. Like most families in New England, Colin and the Christie family became interested in making maple syrup by tapping a few sugar maple trees in their back yard. Colin's first "real" sugaring operation consisted of a wood fired evaporator, a few metal buckets and his draft horse, Tyler.
Farmers around here say that once you get stung by the "sugar" bug it is hard to stop, and they're right. It takes nearly 40 gallons of sap from Sugar Maples
(Acer saccharum) to make a gallon of maple syrup, and at Christies' we have over 3,000 trees tapped with plans to increase to 40,000 in the next 5 years! You start tapping a few trees, then a few more, until suddenly you are mortgaging your house for a new evaporator and you haven't finished paying for the first one! It's a sickness, but we love it!
